Infrared DSRC

Infrared DSRC (IR DSRC) technologies were introduced in European tolling with the implementation of the German LKW-Maut. IR DSRC provides similar functionality as standard 5.8GHz DSRC. However, a different communication medium (physical layer) is used (infrared light instead of a 5.8GHz RF signal).

Depending on the system implementation, IR DSRC may have minor advantages over 5.8GHz DSRC. These advantages are compensated by much higher cost of IR DSRC for integration into OBU's. However, Infrared DSRC is not named under the EU EETS directive and is therefore not needed to achive EU wide interoperability.

FELA uses its own IPR on IR technology and provides RSE and OBU equipment to interested customers.
