German LKW-Maut
The German LKW-Maut is in operation since the beginning of 2005. In Germany, the distance related LKW-Maut applies to all motorways (Autobahn) as well as certain sections of non-motorway federal roads (Bundesstrasse). By law, the Federal Office of Good Transport (BAG) is recipient of the toll on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. The BAG in turn has assigned the Operation to Toll Collect, a private company, held by Daimler, Deutsche Telecom and Cofiroute. BAG is also acting as Enforcement authority, checking the compliance of users as well as monitoring the performance of the Toll Charger (Toll Collect).
The majority of dues in the German LKW-Maut are determined via an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) on-board unit, which utilises GPS for location determination and GSM (i.e. SMS) as the communication channel. Local Short Range Communication is being carried out by Infrared DSRC and DSRC 5.8GHz. Thus, the system is in line with Directive 2004/52/EC. The TRIPON-EU interoperable OBU incorporates these technologies and is, therefore, compatible with the German LKW-Maut system.
Apart from the ETC, a manual booking system exists. This manual system is based on pre-booking of trips. It can be accessed via the internet, a call centre and dedicated Toll Terminals, which are located at service areas and fuel stations on or close to motorway entries and exits.
